20th Anniversary of Welfare Reform

remember the 90s the Spice Girls flannel shirts cloning sheep and the Macarena of course one of the most important events of the decade took place in 1996 when President Clinton and Congress passed bipartisan landmark welfare reform legislation why was this so significant because the bipartisan effort paved the road out of the endless cycle of poverty by instituting time limits and work requirements these reforms paved the way to free them from dependency on the government families across America were put back on the road to prosperity then sadly the government began to tinker and the ability of families to find a way out of crisis became difficult take the number of able-bodied childless adults receiving food stamps until 2009 this number was under 1 million but by 2010 that number jumped to nearly 4 million by 2013 almost 4.9 million able-bodied childless adults were receiving food stamps that's five times the number of people dependent upon the government and that's just one demographic by 2015 nearly 46 million individuals were dependent on an increase of 62% since 2008 that's millions more individuals trapped by the welfare system unable to reach their full potential but there is hope the foundation for government accountability is working to pave the way for struggling families to find prosperity and freedom thanks to FDA's reforms 1.6 million people are free from the welfare dependency trap through work requirements but we're not stopping there we're working with States to expand welfare reform with a new anti-fraud initiative this will move an additional 1.7 million people out of welfare help us put millions more individuals back on the path to freedom and prosperity to learn more about welfare reform click here
