African-Centred Formulations for emotional problems: illuminating the Windrush spirit of wellness’

so we're gonna start off with is out so technically what I'm going to be doing in my session it's about playing it forward and what we can't use is the tools of the oppressor to dismantle the house we need to use tools that are rooted in the best of our culture and know about the experiences that we've had as a way we parenting the damage that happened to us we've had some excellent presentations which have talked about obtaining compensation for our experiences but at least we're healed as people who will use that money to further damage ourselves would either use that money to invest in drugs to be able to heal the pain and number pain or we'll give that money back to the oppressor in terms of trying to buy ourselves expensive items to make up for the disputed sense of self that the this issue has brought to our community so what we're looking at is about how we can actually create wellness but use the winter spirit of wellness because our generation before has have been food for words before so how we can draw on the best of their experiences to get us through the coin experiences and to then teach us what we can do when the next generation faces the next way in which they attack our sense of self okay so if you go onto the next the next time and one of the tools that we'll be talking about is emotional in about circulation circles and I think it really dovetails nicely into what Jackie was saying in her presentation in that we need community healing and the emotional activation of circles is a community healing method that's been put together by the association of black psychologists using the best perfect new culture as a way of dealing with situations just like this so what is that we can say and it is about not relying on the tools of the oppressor – ever – sabers nothing – no it's happening – this before and it's an unknown synthesis is the best of my cooking culture for our wellness okay so if we look about what's happened to our ancestors and then compare it to what's happened to us today okay our ancestors were enslaved and that generated to be the fear that they were going to be sold on to another plantation public humiliation of whipping and then we're going to be sent away from their family at any time if we look across to what's happened to the wind regeneration there's the loss of citizenship so the fear that they're going to be sent away at any time that the the public humiliation for some people have had to share with personal information with other people or with the community to have campaigns that they can actually stay if you look at the our ancestors the 1950s 1960s there were signs that which said no blacks no Irish no dogs that was the Palomar and there was a lack of access to housing the means of survival and a sense of belonging if we now look in 2019 what's happening to the window degeneration the loss of housing the loss of security that lots of access to health care the loss of means of survival again we've seen the parallels to say that the the the game remains the same but the tools use changes we then find that a black community we're finding just to be yes just to stay in this country whereas other communities can put that energy into progressing themselves and into building themselves we've then got to have the best of our minds and our brains on issues such as this and what we found is that and again it was exactly what what happened to our previous generation and we did all the word to build the West that's what didn't and had no credit and what we found is that they were their dreams were dashed or to some extent it went to the next generation to say that okay then it can give us the energy to overcome but sadly to the previous generation the wind bush generation again they did all the work to rebuild Britain after the Second World War now they do their pensions they're being sent away and our ancestors were not allowed to travel not free and there's a generation in this country that are doing that if they travel they may not be allowed back into this country so again the restrictions of our movement so if we look at an African centered formulation in a way of understanding what's happening to us we're noble talks about psyche terrorism this is what's happening when our our communities are fearing our elders being sold and sent away at any time and it's not by mistake that they're doing this it's a way of keeping our community oppressed its ethnic cleansing because if you destroy the family then you destroy the support system for the next generation so who's going to be there to do the babysitting who's that going to be there to pass on the wisdom and the counseling within our communities if I old as a sense away so it's a won't breaking down the family and then they're not as secure not as supported and then they end up doing the behavioral problems that get them all to problems with the criminal justice system at times and he ties apart energy would fighting NASA and obviously you again yeah and even then thanking master for not separating from our family again so it's the same things happening to us so what's the what's the impacts on us at an emotional level and a behavioral level attachment issues because are you really going to get your grandchildren too attached to their grandparents if at any time the in a sense away yeah and then when you have attachment problems in the family you then don't have a secure sense of self which builds resilience which then can help to withstand further attacks it means that people get fear anxiety shame depression low mood anger high blood pressure even fighting the system to be able to stay we had reports of somebody's fighting for eight years eight years of high blood pressure in some cases and stress it can make some people harsh to others because the world's been harsh to them but it can also make some people have increased compassion but that compassion can be an issue in that they can burn themselves out because if you're compassionate too many issues and you're not having that kind of like a sense of how to keep yourself going all through that we can become burnt out and there's a psychological trauma that happens to this generation but also there's the field of epigenetics that we say that it happens to the next generation as well they have that psychological trauma and if you turn on the genes for illnesses so we'll hear about a lot of people gaining cancer or other health problems the stress can actually turn that on so if you look at the spirit of wind watching and wellness what is it it's the spirit that helped our parents and our grandparents through the harsh winters in the UK it's a spirit that helped them this or this and build the NHS when others weren't caring for them it's a spirit that helped our ancestors through enslavement and kept them through it and it's the spirit that helps our ancestors through the middle passage because of all of us here are the descendants of the best of the best women the ones who survived the harsh conditions so we've got that resilient sinners and what we need to do is have technique to tap into that resilience whence hands get hard so we think the the African image that they couldn't kill that wasn't the spirit of moving to the beats yes so our music is important and what keeps us alive what keeps us energized and keeps us being able to have different recovery methods to be able to withstand the pressures of today the community the part of what they had in the nineteen fifties a gate is a way of how do we build ourselves to get come together we had an excellent presentation on the food the soul food the Saturday soup we hear about people taking garlic tablets for example but if you actually season your food with a lot of these seasoning you don't need to take them as supplements the Proverbs the stories of wisdom that are passed on so probably it takes one hand to wash the other can anybody think of any proverbs or I Nancy stories about energy in getting punishment for them but it is about kind of saying that well there'll be a system for that yes it may be the garden make the spirit that sorts them out and we can put that energy into becoming methods for us all right yes exactly what we're doing today we're holding the light for the devil to see the morning exposed and that's exactly what they've done as well thank you it's the analysis stories that the stories of their advances a little spider yes who out tricked the mighty and that's sometimes what we've got to hold on to and that's what the the pathway is going to be for us we've got to keep the culture alive so the cricket the earth blessed you've got to come together we found in the northern term it tests have say that one let's support England thinking that England will support us it doesn't work like that we've got to take time to actually support our own culture and invest in keeping our call to go in the faith of spirituality the religious practices and beliefs that kept our previous generations saying things will get better everything has a season so yes things may be bad today but it doesn't mean it will carry on and we've got to have the faith that will keep us going that we can keep fighting and we want to remember our successful campaigns nobody's having given is anything for nothing they didn't stop enslave because one day they woke up and thought well if you know we've been bad and we'll stop being bad yeah we burnt down plantations yeah to make it it's ineffective for them financially to have enslavement and then that's why they stopped it and we've had campaigns like the new cosplay the campaigns that we've done the Stephen Lawrence campaigns which are brought about just system we've got to remember our successes so the way forward we need to out reflect we need to take time out like this to reflect on where we are we need to have land our oppressor so we can put all our energies on fighting the latest onslaught that they've put on us because the thing is that we do that is a bit like a football picture if you do anything on attack then somebody kind of goes and scores a goal yeah so you've got to also we find them on the next issue as well and the things that maintain our wellness we've got to out plan those who want peace have got to plan just as much as those you want war we've got our strategize we've got to our educators because education is preparation and we've got to prepare for the oppressor because as I said the game remains are saying but the tools that they use changes well we'll go forward in that and then I'll come back to the video so if we go forward to the next slide please so one of these strategies that we've developed is the motion emancipation of circles the association of black psychologists and the community healing network developed a template the community healing for us by us and it's creating safe black spaces it's free the reason why it's free is because the black community is an impoverished community as it is and we haven't always got the money to pay a hundred an hour for psychological therapy independently and many of us wouldn't get through with the NHS system because of the accesses and gatekeeping services so it's community healing that's free it's based on the best of African culture or wisdom so in the healing network in the most Matsumoto circles we share our stories and feelings we read we dance we watch movies people need to get to their exposes off their chests in a safe environment because if you're holding it in that's where it can the disease can actually take manifest in your body we need to deepen our understanding of the impact of our historical forces are not emotional life we make those things free our minds our spirits from the lives of white superiority and black inferiority and we need to tell ourselves new liberating and empowering stories about us as people African ancestry part of the emotion mental patient circles and we'll practiced exceptional emotional wellness skills to help us be our best and involves mindfulness and resilience skills because what we're trying to do is get our Sasabe antifragile that the more they oppress us the more we learn the skills that the oppressor and then we can then have strategies Flores it's like having an app for that and we need to prepare us up emotionally for the next attack that we can recover from the last one so if we can do what you'll see is a six minute video on an emotional mental patients miracles that annually and last year in Italy this year in London and people's views about it um the if you can go back to the presentation and it's anybody in the room who's attended one of the emotional mental patient circles any of the sessions yeah just put it on the spot drops anything around thank you very much so just move on to the conclusion today and we need African scented formulations to understand where we're at and what God is here to really continue to make those links between what happened to our ancestors that we can understand what's going on for us today and we moved to is the spirit of Sankofa and to remember they're the tools and we apply them and I've talked about some of the strategies such as the emotion emancipation spiracles and I haven't got time today to talk about Novak Safa dinkler cards but that's a tool that I've developed that people can use for personal development drawing on the breasts of African culture so I'd like to thank him Tiger put them together such a brilliant program and all the organizers for today thank you [Applause]
