hi my name is naman Sharma I'm a staff systems engineer in networking security business unit at vmware today i'm going to talk about nsx SD van by the low cloud though this solution provides a lot of value for all kind of customers today I'm going to specify talk about what value it provides for a healthcare customers if you look at a typical healthcare organization they have the data centers this is where they host their applications applications like PACs imaging electronic medical records VDI we have our hospitals this is where doctors nurse clinical staff health systems are accessing these applications we have our medical office building where we have again healthcare staff utilizing these applications we have clinics with clinics the cleaners can be remote clinics they can be temporary clinics which are set up more when there is a natural disaster like hurricane tornado again those clinics are accessing these applications to provide the patient care we have urgent care facilities and the last what I call is private doctors or affiliates a lot of time these smaller organizations doesn't have the money and the resources to host these applications on their own and they would leverage you know bigger healthcare organizations to provide those resources to provide those applications and these bigger organizations are more like a service provider to these small affiliates and private doctors if you see all of these sites are in divorce geo and they're relying on their wide area network for the connectivity which means that van is mission critical in providing simple seamless experience of getting care then and where patient wants it so what are some of the challenges that this existing ven architecture first is transport dependency and availability typically these organizations are using MPLS circuits in penis circuits are expensive also they rely on specific hardware which are expensive difficult to configure and manage we also see some of these hospitals and critical locations would have dual links where the backup link is just there for the prime willing to go down you're paying money but you're not utilizing that link typically what we have seen is at time customers would use traffic engineering which is more of from a network standpoint doing active active but it's very again very very hard to configure and manage also availability if you see these locations like Urgent Care or clinics even which are in remote locations they don't have the luxury of having MPLS circuits even if you can get MPLS circuit it takes six to eight weeks for that circuit to be provisioned which means that the other transport mechanisms they have like best-effort broadband or LTE is what is available for them and just by the sheer nature of being best effort and not completely secure healthcare companies have not traditionally used these these links to pass on traffic again we will talk later in this video how we can actually completely make these broadband links more reliable and secure the second is telemedicine we've seen a lot of innovation happening in healthcare industry where now these providers are providing services like nurse on-demand doctor on demand where the patient doesn't have to go to the hospital they can be at home and have a voice or a video call with the clinical staff or a doctor and that ways they can just get the care where where they you know sitting at home these services are relying a great deal on real-time applications voice and video which puts a lot of stress on your wide area network because now your van should have higher bandwidth low latency and a guaranteed SLA the third is margin and acquisitions we're seeing a trend in the healthcare industry where there is a lot of consolidation and M&A happening and at times you know big organizations are acquiring small ones or they're just merging with with like organizations which means that their systems their healthcare records they all have to be accessible but with the existing site as well as the new sites which are coming on board which again is relying on your van for that connectivity to have that homogeneous data being available on every location so what are the ways in which we can overcome these challenges and make your van enabler in providing accessibility to all of your information patient information healthcare information and data regardless of the location and the answer to that is NSX s demand by Vella plow so if I just draw this again so what are some of the benefits with with SD van the first is simplified van management now all of these sites can be managed by a centralized place a centralized UI which we call as the low cloud Orchestrator and all of these sites are managed even if you are adding new sites that onboarding is very very simple and seamless even a non IT staff like a doctor a nurse or admin can bring up the sites in them in a matter of minutes or hours also if you have to make any configuration changes you have a centralized place from where you are making content changes or pushing policies the second is a shared application performance and here we are actually providing you application SLA which is very different from a traditional sense because we have always talked about network SLA is the link up is my network up now with this fabric we can actually provide you SLA for your applications applications like real time applications voice which relies which lie on voice and video and the way we do that is by by something what we call as DMP or dynamic multi pass optimization and it has three distinct characteristics the first is continuous link monitoring so from here centralized you I am actually monitoring all the links I can know the the speed the latency the packet drop the jitter on any of these links so now if there is a congestion or a link degradation I know that because I'm continously monitoring my link the second is dynamic link steering here I can define that if I have dual circuits here yes my traffic has to go through that relay link like let's the EMR traffic has to go on my primary MPLS link but in case there is a link congestion I should use my broadband or other secondary link and dynamically steer the traffic I don't have to make any manual changes or have any manual intervention because it's continuously monitoring that link it is going to dynamically steer per packet traffic of that application on that link to provide that SLA and then the last is on-demand remediation where we are continuously trying to remediate the link so even if a link is having browner conditions like degree degrade performance or congestion we have built in mechanisms to remediate that link so they can we can still use that link to pass on the traffic third is VPN now if you recall I talked about that traditionally broadband has been been best effort or even LTE and healthcare customers have been reluctant in using that because they have to they're critical information patient information pho information and they don't want to put it on a on a broadband link because it's not secure we can actually build VPN tunnels and that VPN tunnels are completely flexible you can do hope to spoke from this side to all the sites or you can build tunnels from side to side it's very very easy to configure I just have to go into my UI define the sites I want to have even connectivity and there's a radio button you just click on that and your VPN is established which makes now this traffic completely secure completely encrypted traditionally the VPN technologies which have been out there like dmvpn has been very difficult to configure but with this we are making it more secure at the same time having that ease of configuration and the fourth benefit is cloud connectivity now we have seen healthier customers also leveraging public cloud and they can leverage it from a standpoint of office 365 or Lausanne which are more SAS based applications or they can use public cloud for is as well and as they are on the journey to the cloud we have a unique proposition which we call as or gateways which are completely owned and managed by VMware and this helps customer in onboarding their applications to the cloud and having that connectivity makes the cloud journey very very simple and effective now as we talk about these benefits what is the value it provides to you as an organization the first is produced when cost like I said MP Ellis is going to be is going to be there and we are not saying that you have to get it if get rid of your mpls but what we are saying here is that you can have transport independence where you can use other links other form of communication like broadband and LTE links and still have MPLS as your primary link but then for some other kind of traffic use broadband link and reduce your van cost the second is ease of operation I have these sites I can manage all of these sites from one place so my operation become very easy generally van is completely diverse in so many different locations managing box by box doesn't scale it leads to error now I have one place from where I can just manage all of these locations so it makes my operations very very easy with simplified management configuration and operations third is analytics and that leads to your app SLA this fabric which we have built here is not just only providing traditional connectivity but it is also giving it's also very intelligent because it is giving you a lot of information it is telling you your link condition how is your link performing it is also telling you what kind of applications are you running in each of these site your top talkers the top applications based on that data of your actual data you cannot define you can create those business policies and business policies are another layer of abstraction which we are creating where we are focusing on the application and we are creating policies which are tailored for the application saying that if I have my EMR application in this example I can say critical traffic of that email application should always flow on my primary MPLS link but maybe slightly less critical traffic like reporting can utilize my broadband link and I define that business policy which is I'm define how that application first of all should get highest priority and again how the traffic should be distributed among multiple links and once I define that business policy I just have to apply that and Dad could apply that gets applied so excuse me to this hospital these clinics anywhere where I am using that application it doesn't matter what kind of link I have in that location what kind of hardware I'm using what kind of interface that link is connected to that is the section we are providing we are defining our intent of how that application should should behave and what esle aid should provide and that business policy gets applied to everywhere and the last is on-ramp to cloud like I said cloud is becoming more and more real for customers we have seen you know customers putting their application in the cloud and how can we help them in that journey and this is where again this solution is very valuable the other key thing to mention here is that this technology is completely flexible like I said we don't we don't expect you to go and refresh your van right away we understand this is the new technology customers are going to try that and that's why the architecture is very flexible you if you have your existing MPLS router sitting here from any other vendor we can actually have our boxes in parallel with that so there are multiple design options where we can actually have we can slowly on what customers on 2sd van and still have connectivity to do non SD ven sites so it's a very very flexible architecture and we can help you with different design options if you take a step back what we have built here is not just a connectivity but a fabric which has complete intelligence which knows how your links are doing what kind of applications are running on your environment how are they behaving
