Paychex Blue Cast: Employee Well-Being & Productivity

hello and welcome to this paycheck slew cast on wellness programs and today we're looking at a familiar mantra in the industry the claim that wellness programs are a proven way to boost employee output now it sounds good but is this really true I mean is there really a direct link between employee health and higher productivity to get a better handle on this we talked with Bodmer Berg manager of employee health and wellness of paychecks and in this presentation he guides us through some research on the wellness productivity connection plus he uncovers some of the compelling benefits of a wellness program and three steps that you can take to build a culture of well-being in your company okay let's see if we can start off by separating the facts from the claims in the industry and if you look at reputable studies from the integrated benefits Institute or the health enhancement research organization there really is no proven link between wellness programs and performance however research suggests very positive trends and the evolution of wellness for example there's a shift taking place from framing employee health as a purely physical characteristic to adding financial and emotional aspects of the employee and as a result the perception of employee health is evolving from wellness to the broader concept of well-being this gives employers a broader framework they can leverage for winning the hearts and minds of employees which is really what we're all after so to summarize Bob puts current research into perspective there may not be a magic lever to increase employee productivity that a culture of well-being can add tangible value to both employees and employers and now in part two of our blue cast let's talk about this value for starters a wellness program sends a message to your employees that you care about their well-being it can also help them feel a greater sense of connectedness with your company and as a result it can help improve employee satisfaction and retention it can also increase positive word-of-mouth from employees out in the community and improve your recruitment efforts also it can lead to positive health outcomes like improved blood pressure among participating employees it can even increase the perceived value of an employer's benefits package and finally some companies see higher loyalty engagement and energy on the job among participating employees so if you step back there are really many compelling benefits of a wellness program now imagine the impact that some of these could have on your business which brings us to our final section action steps is how we bring these benefits to life in your organization and to give us some direction on how to do this Bob outlines a simple three-step blueprint first you need to focus on things you can directly control you may not be able to control productivity but you can lay a solid foundation for employee well-being this includes providing good jobs with clear direction sufficient tools and training for employees reasonable hours with adequate flexibility care coverage fair and competitive wages family leave and time off are important building blocks because they help employees feel good about their jobs and they give you a foundation you can build on as we move on to the next step and that is to foster a culture of well-being in your company to do this make sure that the well-being of your employees is authentically supported visible daily across all levels of the company and infused into as many employee decision-making processes as possible in doing these things you're setting yourself up for even greater success because the more employees feel like your culture supports well-being the more likely they will adopt any kind of program that you roll out which takes us to the third step of the blueprint and that's building a truly engaging program this is where you shift from erecting of solid core foundation to the programmatic aspects of wellness and for many this is where the fun really begins pick activities that most employees can participate in without having to be quote unquote athletic these can vary from walks and hikes to bike rides or volleyball you can also spice up your program by adding healthy foods like healthy potlucks and we can't forget healthy Lunch and Learn sessions plus if some employees enjoy cooking let them demonstrate their favorite healthy recipes just as long as they share their delicacies with others and finally encourage community by allowing employees to form teams and compete well as you can see you can create an engaging program with a healthy dose of imagination and a pinch of fun because this is what really leads to healthy participation to summarize we hope that this blue cast is giving you a healthy perspective on wellness programs including research in the industry some of the key benefits of a wellness program and three steps that you can take to bring these benefits to life in your organization in the final analysis bob says employee well-being is really about how companies are winning the hearts and minds of their employees and how you can do the same well this has been another blue cast presented by a paycheck we thank you for your interest in learning more about this topic and for additional information be sure and visit paychecks
