Pet Safety During Fourth of July Celebrations

welcome back to the morning blend research shows that more pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year animal wellness and pet expert Amy Gilbreth joins us with some helpful tips to keep our furry friends safe and happy during this busy festival season good morning to you hello it makes me so sad to think about pets who are lost on the 4th of July and I'm sure it's because of all the incredible noises the fireworks the things they see the things they hear that scare them it is it is unfortunately the busiest time of year for animal shelters they fill up really quickly with dogs and cats but hear those loud noises and panic and flee so what's your best advice for keeping pets safe on the 4th of July I have two really important tips for everyone about how to get your pet home quickly if they ever get lost the first one is please make sure they're always wearing a collar with an ID tag that has your contact information and the second is get them microchipped it's a tiny device about the size of a grain of rice it gets implanted under the skin between their shoulder blades it's permanent identification but it's only an ID number for your pet you have to register it in a database so that the shelter can find your contact information I have a great free resource from that it's called found org it's from the Michelson found animal's foundation if you have your microchip number and a few minutes you can go to found org and register that ship for free doesn't matter what brand of microchip and with a registered microchip your dog is two-and-a-half times more likely and your cat is a whopping 21 times more likely to get home if they ever end up in a shelter Wow and they've made it so simple – that's wonderful thank you for that tip I also wonder if there are any relief products that you think actually work yes there are you may have heard a lot of buzz about CBD oil for people it actually has great anti-anxiety properties in pets as well hemp is legal in all 50 states so you don't have to worry about that my favorite brand is from a company called pet relief they're based out of Colorado and they have developed a proprietary strain of the plant that's just for dogs and cats they have a full line of USDA certified organic products that's everything from oils and capsules even to a topical cream my personal favorite is their veterinarian developed liposomal oil it's in an Alaskan salmon base so you put the oil directly on their food that's great because number one it absorbs into their body more quickly for faster relief and number two it tastes great to them so they're happy to take it and you don't have to fight them to get a pill down yeah that's great I like that idea what about inside our homes is there anything you suggest to keep pets calm and safe in our homes I do suggest that you plan ahead for the actual day of the fourth if you have a dog please get them out earlier in the day for a long walk burn off some of that energy so they're ready for a quiet night at home and then bring everybody inside well before those fireworks start close the windows pull the shades set up a really comfortable quiet area for your pet with their favorite better blanket maybe pull out a special toy or a bone to keep them busy and you can even think about turning on the TV or the radio that background noise can really help distract them from what's going on outside and a nice hug like I'm giving Roy right now is very calming to pets so you may want to look into the anti-anxiety wraps and coats for dogs and cats it's some great advice there where can we go for more information you can register any brand of microchip for free at found org and you can find all of the pet relief products at their website which is pet relief calm or at independent pet stores in your area wonderful Amy thanks so much we appreciate your help happy 4th of July it's name to you thanks again
