UD's Innovation Health & Design Lab

because of my skill set and my background as a fashion designer I can actually use that to help people and that had never occurred to me like I was obsessed with the beauty of clothes or the design of an oak couture gown and now I'm looking at how can clothes really change quality of life and impact impact people's health and and that's been a game changer for me so as director of innovation for this lab I'm in a position now where I can kind of in a small way try to inspire others the way I was inspired what's great about my lab is that we have about 30 undergraduate researchers who work with me and they're from all over the place and it's all been word-of-mouth how they've found out about the research so there's students who are physics majors computer science majors mechanical engineers fashion designers electrical engineers and they all have the same interest they all are excited when they hear there's an opportunity to make things that help people you know when I was going back from my masters or even when I was doing my bachelor's like I had no clue that this could be a thing if I can expose them to things that they may not think about or it may not think is possible within the confines of this lab then I think we can create honestly really create empathetic designers whether or not the students go off to do this as a career is completely different but I feel like they get a sense of empathy in a sense of understanding need and understanding real pain points for people that they could take into other other careers whether it's a health-related career or not what I care about our students are our mission is what we do and what the mission is is to design wearables that help improve quality of life or help improve independence and mobility everything we do is user centered everything we do has to start with a community based problem and I think students are drawn to that real world applied experience where they may be learning about something in the classroom or they may be exposed to something and with their coursework but here they're actually like effecting change and that can be really impactful
